The event likely to attract the biggest crowd is the Glendale Show (pictured), now in its 117th year, featuring a host of rural attractions and stalls. Spectacular carriage driving and falconry displays and a Ready Steady Cook style cooking competition are some of the highlights of the event on Bank Holiday Monday.

In the bottom corner of the county on the same day, Blanchland & Hunstanworth Show (see link below) will be taking place, and two days before on Saturday Bellingham will also be welcoming visitors to its Show to take part and watch various traditional competitions.

The meeting point for the 10am start is the entrance to the reserve next to the Choppington Welfare Centre.

Members of the public can go along for the full three hours or can just drop in for half an hour.

Heather O'Neill, from Northumberland Wildlife Trust, said: "The litter pick is a great way for people in a community to get to know each other a bit better.

"Very often people come along to an event such as this and feel such satisfaction at the end of it that they volunteer for future activities."

The all-purpose authority, which will take over from the existing county council and six districts in April, has to find budget savings of about £25.5m in 2009/10 to balance the books.

The Liberal Democrat-led council is planning about 800 job losses and a council tax increase of 4.8% this year, but says it needs to make extremely tough decisions on where the spending axe will fall.

Light displays across Northumberland

Landmark locations across Northumberland will be seen in a new light this winter with the return of a hugely popular winter festival.

Northumberland Lights - and the award-winning team behind it - are back with more bright ideas for outdoor illuminations.

From November 2 to 30, the winter festival will bathe some of the most beautiful and remote spots from Blyth to the Borders in an array of colour, in celebration of the county's contrasting architectural and natural environment.
